Paper Planes Fitted Caps

A fitted has no closure. Nothing adjusts, nothing sits across the back of the crown, and the line of the cap runs unbroken all the way around. That is the whole appeal, and it is why fitteds are the collector's format rather than the convenient one.

The trade-off is that a fitted is sized to your head and cannot be rescued if you get it wrong. A snapback that runs slightly large is still wearable. A fitted that runs slightly small is a headache by hour three.

Paper Planes fitteds are built on New Era's 59Fifty, structured, flat-brimmed, six panels, sized in eighths from roughly 6 ⅞ upward.

Getting the size right

Measure around your head just above the ears and across the mid-forehead, keep the tape snug but not tight, and take the measurement twice. That number maps to a hat size.

If you land between sizes, go up. A fraction loose is a hat; a fraction tight is a problem you will notice all day.

Why the fit is not just the number

A structured crown holds its shape regardless of your head, so crown depth and head shape both matter. Two people who wear the same size can prefer different caps, which is the argument for trying one on in person if you can.

Where to find your size

Two routes, and they solve different problems.

For size depth, Lids is the shortest path. It became the first national retailer to carry Paper Planes headwear and runs more than 1,200 locations. Hat Club is the other specialist worth knowing. If you have spent years being told they only have 7 ¼, start there.

For range and colourways, the independent stockists carry pieces that never reach national distribution. Several specialise, 4U House of Fitteds in the Bronx trades on it by name.

Construction

Wool and wool blends on most structured fitteds, with the plane embroidered rather than printed. Materials in headwear →
