The Hat You Couldn't Buy

There was a stretch of time when you could not buy a Paper Planes hat. Not limited. Not sold out. Not for sale, at any price, anywhere.

The mechanic they built instead of a sales channel

Here is what refusing a million sales bought them, in Jones's own words: > "The roll-out of the hat was flawless, because when you saw somebody else - > especially outside of New York, if you ran into somebody with the hat, you'd > be thinking: damn, who do they know?" Who do they know.

Why it was called a Crown in the first place

The name was load-bearing: > "That's why we name the hat crowns from the door. We want you to feel > important because you got this crown on." A gifted crown.

What this means if you want one now

You can just buy one today, the Original Crown has been in the line since 2014, and it is stocked at independent shops, at hat specialists nationally, and at the SoHo flagship, where in-store exclusives keep a version of the old scarcity alive.
